Julia Rusakova was an astronaut aboard the NASA spacecraft Odyssey in the 2017 mission to explore Saturn's largest moon, Titan. The mission was diverted when a massive unknown object was detected, later known as the Tet.

Biography[]

Julia and her husband, Jack Harper, started their first year as astronauts in 2017, shortly after they got married. Julia was sleeping when her ship was pulled by the unknown object, and the mission commander, her husband, separated the cockpit from the rest of the ship. In this way, Julia returned with the rest of the crew to Earth orbit, all in deep sleep, while the pilots were captured. What was left of the odyssey spacecraft was orbiting the earth. 60 years later, in 2077, Julia's ship was back on Earth's surface. Her husband's clone saves her in a war-torn land. The two set off in search of the truth while rebuilding their romantic relationship.

Three years later, she has given birth to a daughter and lives in the lake cabin with a painting inside. Julia is harvesting an orchard and has built a wooden boat. Her daughter calls out to her when she sees members of the human resistance arriving across the lake. Julia sees Jack appear and her daughter asks "who is that?" Julia and Jack smile lovingly at each other.

2017[]

On yet another dating day, Julia met Jack Harper at the Empire State skyscraper on the busy streets of New York. The two greeted each other smiling and happily before holding hands. Jack was anxious, as if he were preparing some revelation. When she arrived, they looked at each other before climbing to the top, where Jack told her to look through a telescope saying "look through here and I will show you the future".

While she did this, the young man held up an engagement ring in front of the view lens. Julia paused for a moment and they looked into each other's eyes before Julia pulled him over and gave him a loving hug and accepted Jack's proposal.

Julia decides to accompany her husband and embark on her first cosmic journey. During a 2017 NASA mission, the crew compartment on the Odyssey was ejected by her husband Jack Harper, the mission commander. Julia was among the crew saved - all in a state of delta (deep) sleep. Jack and his co-pilot Victoria Olsen were kidnapped and cloned by the Tet.

2077[]

After orbiting Earth for 60 years, the Odyssey was returned to Earth's surface by a scavenger beacon, however, the rest of the Odyssey's surviving crew were killed by the drones. She was rescued by Jack, Technician 49, who brought her back to his base, Tower 49, where she met Vika and introduced herself as Julia Rusakova, a Russian astronaut and the sole survivor of the spaceship crash. She was horrified to learn that her remaining crew had been killed and that she had been sleeping soundly for 60 years.

The next morning, Julia is sad, looking at the dawn on the horizon through the glass walls of Tech 49 and Vika's modern, futuristic home. She asked Technician 49 to take her back to the crash site to retrieve the flight recorder, which would contain secret audio. After finding the tape recorder, the two were immediately captured by the scavenger people.

The scavengers are human survivors who tell Technician 49 that Tet is the real enemy. Sergeant Sykes threatened to kill her if 49 didn't cooperate. They were later freed by the leader of the survivors, Malcolm Beach, after drones tracked Julia and Tech 49 to their hideout (the "Raven Rock" base).

Technician 49 took her to the ruins of the Empire State Building, where he sent a search signal to Vika. As Julia looked into the telescope, Technician 49 demanded to know what she wasn't telling him and what her mission was on the Odyssey.

She told him that their mission was their first research flight to Titan, one of the Saturn's moon, but they were assigned to investigate an unidentified object in space which she reveals is the Tet. The technician 49 considered this impossible and frustratedly asked her "who are you?". She replies "I'm your wife", which surprises the technician 49.

She tells him the story of how he proposed to her in the exact spot they were standing and shows him the wedding ring she wore on a silver necklace around her neck. They shared a loving embrace as the technician 49's jet sent by Vika reached them.

When they returned to Tower 49, Julia witnessed Tech 49 trying to get Vika to safety before Vika was incinerated by a drone. Julia saved Technician 49 from the same fate using the jet gun.

Tech 49 and Julia were chased through the ruins of New York by drones trying to kill them.

They were able to evade most of them before the only remaining drone crashed into the ship, forcing them to eject and crash into the radiation zone, a sandy desert with some water ponds.

Julia followed Tech 49 as he went to check out the other jet and was shocked to see that Jack, Tech 52 looked exactly like Tech 49. As she watched them in a fight, she was accidentally shot.

Technician 49 went to Tower 52 to retrieve a medical kit and healed Julia's wound before taking her to the lake house he built in the wooded mountains.

Technician 49 and Julia regain their relationship and share a kiss, spending the night together. The cabin next door is similar to the house that Jack had built for her in 2017. The next day, they returned to the human resistance's hideout to help them.

As 49 reprogrammed a drone to deliver a bomb to Tet, an alien craft with an artificial intelligence, Malcolm told them the story of how Tet arrived and the invasion that followed. As they prepared to send the drone, the hideout was attacked by three drones. The captured drone was destroyed in the attack and Malcolm was gravely injured.

In Raven Rock, Julia is safe and hugs Jack.

Julia told 49 to bring her to Tet so they wouldn't kill him. As she was preparing to go back to delta sleep, she and 49 kissed and he told her "dream of us". 49 watched her fall asleep and took her capsule to the jet. When Julia woke up, she was surprised to see that she was still on Earth and back at the lake house, next to a canvas of a bucolic painting.

49 took Malcolm to Tet with the bomb as a cover. She watched in tears as the Tet exploded out of the sky with Malcolm and 49 inside and landed on one knee on the lawn of the lake cabin.

2080[]

Her story was created by William Monahan and Joseph Kosinski. The story was later readapted by the writers of Oblivion, Karl Gajdusek and Michael deBruyn. Marlene Stewart was responsible for the design of Julia's clothes.

Olga Kurylenko Julia Rusakova

Olga Kurylenko in an interview about the movie Oblivion.

Julia is played by Olga Kurylenko. The actors were in cities like Rio de Janeiro and Moscow to promote the film during the premiere.

For casting the lead role of Julia opposite Tom Cruise, the producers considered five actresses: Jessica Chastain, Olivia Wilde, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace and Olga Kurylenko, and all five auditioned on August 27, 2011.

Olga Kurylenko felt comfortable and happy as Julia while working alongside Cruise, but found the addition to the cast test tense. Julia had an action scene, in which the character shoots the Heckler & Koch UMP submachine gun, but overall, Julia's description is a loving character that represents true love and nostalgia for the past.

When asked about the choice of the A Whiter Shade of Pale song for the movie, Olga explained: "oh, the love scene. We actually had a different song, so it was replaced. It was “Unforgettable.” Joe sent it out to me and I listened to it. It's a beautiful song. But, yes, the music is wonderful. They've played it at most of (“Oblivion”’s various worldwide) premieres on the red carpet, and that music is so touching. At one point—I think I was in Dublin—the music was playing so loud I almost cried. I thought, “I can’t cry on the red carpet.” But it's just so heartbreaking. It's very emotional music. It shows us that music is such an important part of a movie, too, because it evokes so many feelings in us: memories, nostalgia, things that are connected to our past. This music is so fabulous. It fits the movie perfectly."
